This demographic shift highlights disparities between member states and neighbouring countries. As of January 1, 2024, 21.6% of the EU's population was aged 65 or older, up from 21.3% in 2023. Over the past decade, this figure has surged by nearly 3 percentage points, reflecting long-term trends of low birth rates and increasing life expectancy.
